Avira is a multinational corporation established in Germany and founded by Tjark Auerbach. Mainly owned by a family, its business objective is to provide information technology security for electronics such as computers, laptops, smartphones as wells as networks and servers by manufacturing antivirus software, internet security and tools for privacy, performance and identity. These products are delivered either as software or as cloud-based. Avira’s products are essential to any form of Internet or electronics usage as cyber breach can occur even offline.

Avira maintains its headquarters in Tettnang in Germany and has satellite offices in Romania, Munich and Bucharest. Its marketing and sales offices are located in China and USA, particularly California and Silicon Valley. In 2012, Avira was dubbed as the 6th biggest antivirus manufacturer with more than a hundred million customers and sharing approximately 9.6 percent in the global market based on OPSWAT.

The bulk of Avira’s security products are dedicated to Microsoft Windows’ users, although it also has one type of product for MAC users—its Avira free mac security which can run on OS X 10.9 and later. Avira also caters to Android and iOS users. And like the MAC platform, its product for iOS is limited to free version and compatible with iPad and iPhone.

Avira’s security products for Microsoft Windows include a free version of antivirus which includes services such as anti-virus and anti-spyware for personal uses. Other products are antivirus pro, system speedup, Internet security suite, ultimate protection suite and rescue system.

For its android platform, it offers a free version, which can run on Android version 2.2 and later; and security pro version, which is an upgrade of its free application.

There are five categories in Avira antivirus software. These are the computer protection, Internet protection, child protection, mobile administration and mobile protection.

  • PC Protection. Its computer protection has options such as to complete and quick scan. You can also specify the regions of scanning including removable drives, local drives and local hard drives, active processes, My Documents section and Windows system directory. There is also an option to include in scanning active malware and rootkits.Once the software spots a malware, it will place such malware, it will be quarantined. From the quarantine, you have additional option of forever deleting the malware or restore it where Avira incorrectly flag it as malware.
  • Internet Protection. Under the Internet protection are features such as email protection and web protection, both of which are available only in pro version.
  • Child Protection. The child protection feature is a tool labeled as SocialShield which enables you to actively track your child’s activities on Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook. This can be done by creating an account with Avira and you provide them with your child’s log-in information on social media accounts.
